PUBLIC STATEMENT:

Act For Sudan Supports Kenyan High Court Ruling on Bashir
December 8, 2011

Act for Sudan supports the recent decision of the Kenyan High Court that Sudan’s president must be arrested and handed over to the International Criminal Court (ICC) if he sets foot on Kenyan soil.

The Court rightly ruled that the new Kenyan constitution provides that any treaties or conventions which Kenya has ratified become domesticated and part of Kenyan law. Since Kenya has ratified the Rome Statute under which the ICC seeks the arrest of Bashir, it should comply with its obligations under the statute.

We applaud the actions of the Kenyan Court and hope it will not succumb to political pressure to overturn this just ruling. We urge the Kenyan government to continue to uphold justice, especially for the victims of genocide and mass atrocities, and to continue to act as a responsible member of the international community by living up to its agreements, even when faced with threats by those who seek impunity.
