Dear (Name),
In 2008, the Obama Campaign promised that, “As president, Obama will take immediate steps to end the genocide in Darfur by increasing pressure on the Sudanese and pressure the government to halt the killing and stop impeding the deployment of a robust international force.” Four years later, however, the situation in Darfur and other regions of Sudan has only gotten worse.
Despite President Obama’s inaction and the lack of pressure by his Administration on the Sudanese government to halt the killing, Politifact, a Pulitzer-Prize winning project of the Tampa Bay Times which tracks progress against Obama’s campaign promises, is still rating Obama’s track record on Darfur as “In the Works.”
Since President Obama has been in office the violence in Darfur has continued. Millions of Darfuris remain in refugee and Internally Displaced Persons camps suffering from violence, starvation and genocide by attrition. By not keeping his promise in Darfur, President Obama has failed to adequately confront the genocidal policies and practices of the government of Sudan, which has further emboldened the Sudanese regime to pursue its violent agenda across Sudan. This failure has resulted in even greater numbers of Sudanese civilians subjected to state-sponsored violence, displacement and death.
Sincerely, XXX
