As a senior official within the government of Sudan, Mr. Karti, along with many other Sudanese officials, has played a direct role in Sudanese government war crimes for many years. His resume includes an extended stint as coordinator and leader of Popular Defense Forces (PDF), who were responsible for widespread abuses in southern Sudan during the 1990s. He has reinforced his government’s decisions to expel U.N. humanitarian aid officials on several occasions. Today, he represents a government led by internationally-indicted war criminals.
The National Prayer Breakfast is an excellent event for those seeking a better world for all of us to live in. Mr. Karti and the government he represents have categorically rejected the values of this esteemed event with word and deed for decades now by destroying Sudan’s rich heritage and blocking the aspirations of the Sudanese people. Particularly in light of the Prayer Breakfast’s remembrance of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide, the promise of “never again” simply cannot be fulfilled when individuals responsible for intentional human suffering are allowed to stand amongst those seeking to end such abuses.
